Shenton Park Village Dental to Celebrate Harmony Day

young happy familyAt Shenton Park Village Dental, we believe celebrating our cultural diversity is important. That’s why we are joining in on the festivities of Harmony Day this year (21 March), which promotes inclusivity and belonging. Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all backgrounds.

A Rich & Diverse Culture

With over 7.5 million people having migrated to Australia since 1945, it’s clear that Australians come from all backgrounds. Did you know that almost half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was? As a whole, Australians can identify with 300 ancestries!

“We recognise Australia has a rich and diverse culture, and everyone is welcome at our practice. We want to ensure each patient feels comfortable, included and respected,” said Dr. Ash (Dentist).

Did you know Dr Ash’s family has Kenyan and Indian heritage? To share some of Dr Ash’s cultural dishes, she has even shared a recipe that is a staple in her household.

Dr Ash shares, “Matoke is a nutritious and hearty dish that my family loves. The plantains are a complex carbohydrate, low on the glycemic index and the recipe has no sugar – rest assured it is a great choice for your teeth.”

Matoke

  • 8 -10 plantains
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tbsp Avocado oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 -3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green capsicum, chopped
  • 3 large garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 chili pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup vegetable stock
  • cayenne pepper (to taste)
Peel the plantains, cut into cubes, sprinkle with lemon juice, and set aside.

Heat oil in a large pan. Fry the Onion, tomatoes, green capsicum, hot pepper, and garlic together. Add spices to taste. Add vegetable stock. Continue frying and stirring until the liquid boils.

Reduce heat. Add plantains. Cover and simmer over low heat until plantains. Serve matoke hot.

Removing Barriers to Dental Care

If you’ve put off getting dental care for whatever reason, we want you to know you’re welcome here. We never want cost to be a barrier to getting the care you need. Insurance is accepted, and we offer convenient payment plans. Some patients also hesitate to get dental care because of anxiety. Dr Ash and her team are kind and caring and put patients at ease at every visit.

On 21 March, stop by the practice or keep your eye on our socials to see the team at Shenton Park Village Dental bring some orange flare to Harmony Day! We will also have some tasty orange treats for patients to enjoy!
