Dental Implants in Perth

woman smiling in mirror at dental visitMissing a tooth changes more than your smile. It can affect how you eat, how you speak, and how confident you feel doing either. At Shenton Park Village Dental, we’ve been helping the Shenton Park, Floreat, Nedlands and Subiaco community replace missing teeth with implants designed to closely resemble the appearance and function of a natural tooth.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post, biocompatible and designed for long-term use in the body, that’s placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Over several months it fuses with the surrounding bone in a process called osseointegration. Once that foundation is secure, a custom-made crown is fitted on top, giving you a replacement tooth that stands independently, without relying on the teeth either side of it for support.

What Causes Tooth Loss That Might Need an Implant?

Patients come to us for implants for a range of reasons, and a proper assessment is always the first step to understanding what’s right for your situation. Patients may consider dental implants for several reasons, including:

  • A tooth knocked out or badly damaged in an accident or sporting injury
  • A tooth lost to untreated or long-standing decay
  • Tooth loss caused by advanced gum disease
  • A tooth that’s failed after root canal treatment or fractured beyond repair
  • A congenitally missing tooth that never developed
  • Ongoing frustration with a loose partial denture that affects eating or speaking

What Types of Implants Do You Offer?

Our focus is on single tooth and multiple tooth implants, the solutions that suit the vast majority of patients we see.

Single Tooth Implants

Single tooth implants replace one missing tooth with one implant and one crown. Because the implant stands on its own, we don’t need to prepare or grind down the healthy teeth next to the gap, which is one of the main advantages implants have over a traditional bridge.

Multiple Tooth Implants

Multiple tooth implants are used when two or more teeth in a row are missing. Rather than placing an implant for every single tooth, we can often place implants at each end of the gap and use them to support a fixed bridge across the missing teeth, restoring function without the bulk of a removable denture.

For patients who need a full arch rebuilt, we work closely with a trusted network of specialist oral surgeons and prosthodontists for complex cases, so you’re always matched with the right expertise for your individual needs.

What Can You Expect From the Implant Process?

Your journey starts with an initial consultation with Dr Ash (Dentist), including an intraoral scan to get a detailed picture of your mouth and assess whether implants are a suitable option for you. From there:

Step 1: Treatment Planning

We build a treatment plan tailored to your goals, your bone and gum health, and your medical history. A CBCT scan gives us a detailed 3D view of your jaw, letting us plan the exact position, angle and depth of the implant before we ever pick up a handpiece.

Step 2: Guided Placement

That plan is used to fabricate a custom surgical guide, so the implant is placed with precision on the day. Implant placement is generally well tolerated and, where appropriate, may be completed using a minimally invasive keyhole technique. Many patients can return to light daily activities within a day or two, although recovery times vary depending on the procedure and individual circumstances.

Step 3: Healing & Final Crown

Then comes the healing period. Osseointegration, the bone fusing to the implant, generally takes three to six months, depending on your individual healing and the specifics of your case. We can often provide an interim option so you’re not left with a visible gap while you wait. Once healing is confirmed, your final custom crown is fitted, completing the process.

What Technology Is Used
for Implant Placement?

We use the MIS implant system for our patients’ dental implants. MIS has been designing and manufacturing dental implants for close to three decades and is now part of the Dentsply Sirona group, one of the largest dental technology manufacturers in the world.

Their implants are engineered to support integration with the surrounding bone and work with the digital planning and guided surgery systems we use. This allows CBCT imaging and surgical guide fabrication to inform the planned position, angle and depth of the implant before placement.

What Results Can Patients Expect?

  • A replacement tooth that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • No need to prepare or rely on neighbouring healthy teeth for support
  • Helps maintain jawbone density in the area of the missing tooth
  • A fixed, non-removable solution rather than a denture that needs to be taken out
  • With proper care, implants can last many years, though individual results vary

Shenton Park dentist Dr Ash

Meet Dr Akshee (Ash) Shah, BDSc (Hons)

Dr Ash is Principal Dentist at Shenton Park Village Dental and leads dental implant treatment at the practice. She holds a Bachelor of Dental Science with First Class Honours from the University of Queensland, completed with a focus on periodontology, and provides single tooth and multiple tooth implant treatment guided by 3D digital planning.

Dr Ash takes a patient-first approach, prioritising clear explanation of the process, costs and risks so patients feel informed and comfortable at every stage of treatment.

One patient who lived with a missing front tooth for around ten years chose a guided implant placement over a bone graft, and the final crown blended naturally with her low smile line.

Case Study: Restoring a Missing Front Tooth

One of our patients came to us after living with a missing front tooth for around ten years, relying on a loose partial denture that made eating and talking difficult. A bone and tissue graft was discussed, but the patient preferred to avoid additional surgery. After talking through the options, Dr Ash recommended an implant placement with a small, clearly explained compromise in the gum aesthetics around the site.

With careful 3D planning, the implant was placed using a guided technique, and the final crown blended naturally with the patient’s low smile line. The result restored the patient’s ability to eat and speak with a fixed replacement tooth. Individual results vary and depend on each patient’s specific circumstances.

Caring for Your Implant

Good oral hygiene is essential to how long your implant lasts. Brushing and flossing around the implant, along with regular check-ups and professional cleans, helps protect both the implant and the surrounding gum and bone. Longevity also depends on broader factors like your general health, so looking after your implant is very much a partnership between what we do in the chair and what you do at home.

Studies show a large proportion of implants remain successful at the ten-year mark, with many lasting well beyond that when properly maintained, though outcomes depend on individual circumstances.

What Are the Payment Options for Dental Implants?

We don’t want cost to be the reason someone puts off treatment they need. We offer flexible payment plans for implant treatment, and where it suits your case, we can split payment by stage rather than asking for the full amount upfront, so you’re paying as you progress through consultation, planning, surgery and final crown rather than all at once.

If you’re eligible, you may also be able to access your superannuation to help fund treatment; eligibility rules are set by the ATO and your fund, so we’re happy to talk through what that could look like for you. We’re also preferred providers for a wide range of health funds, and our team can help you understand what your policy covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Many adults with one or more missing teeth may be suitable candidates, provided there is enough healthy bone to support the implant and any active decay or gum disease has been addressed. Certain medications and health conditions can also affect suitability.

If there is not enough healthy bone to support an implant, we may discuss additional procedures, such as bone grafting, or referral to an appropriate specialist before implant placement. We will assess these factors during your initial consultation, including an intraoral scan, before recommending an approach.

How long does the whole implant process take?

From your first consultation to your final crown, the process typically spans several months. Planning, the CBCT scan and surgical guide fabrication happen before placement, and healing for osseointegration generally takes three to six months after the implant is placed, depending on your individual case.

Can implants replace more than one missing tooth?

Yes. For two or more consecutive missing teeth, we can often place implants at either end of the gap to support a fixed bridge. For patients needing a full arch of teeth replaced, we refer to trusted specialist colleagues who focus on that level of complex, full-mouth implant work.

Will I be without a tooth while my implant heals?

Not necessarily. We can often provide an interim option to wear while your implant integrates with the bone, so you’re not left with a visible gap during the healing period.

What payment options are available?

We offer flexible payment plans and can split the cost of treatment by stage, rather than requiring full payment upfront. Eligible patients may also be able to use superannuation towards treatment, and we’re preferred providers for a range of major health funds.
