Tooth Extractions in Shenton Park

Looking inside mouthAt Shenton Park Village Dental, our goal is to help you keep your natural teeth as long as possible. But certain situations make it unhealthy to keep a tooth, and in those cases, extraction is the safest solution. Extractions are not the frightening procedures many people imagine, and we do most of them non-surgically, with little post-procedure pain.

Why Would a Tooth Need to Be Extracted?

When a tooth can’t be restored because damage to the root is beyond repair, the root is fractured, or decay is so extensive that a crown or root canal aren’t viable, extraction may be the only choice. We endeavour to save the tooth whenever possible, and we will exhaust other options before resorting to extraction.

Wisdom teeth are a different situation. They often require extraction for other reasons, and the process is different. If necessary, we will refer you to a specialist for wisdom tooth extractions or other orthodontic extractions.

Full extractions (removing all remaining teeth) can be done under oral sedation with an anaesthetist, and we can arrange this surgery at hospital with a licensed oral surgeon.

The Process

Dr Ash (Dentist) will do a thorough examination to assess the condition of the tooth and gums. We’ll take X-rays, OPGs (panoramic X-rays) and CT scans as needed to determine the best way to proceed with the extraction. We’ll explain the situation and your options, and get your consent to move forward.

We’ll numb the area with a local anaesthetic, then move the tooth to gently loosen the roots and remove it. You may feel slight pressure when we remove it. If we determine the tooth can’t come out normally because the root is fractured or other reasons, we will do a surgical extraction.

After either procedure, we’ll make sure you’re feeling okay before you leave. We’ll prescribe pain relief as needed. Our staff will ring you the next day to see how you’re doing, and you’ll have a follow-up appointment within a week to see how you’re healing. We can arrange medical certificates for missed work.
